Top Urinary Diseases in dogs and how to manage them

As a pet parent, knowing that your dog is suffering from something can be very overwhelming and stressful. Especially if it's a urinary disease, aside from the behavioral changes of our furry friend, accidents and messy clean-ups can be a big concern, too.

Kidney Infection. Kidney infection happens when your dog is exposed to toxins and infections that causes the kidney to lose its capabilities to function well for the body. A dog that has a kidney failure will drink too much and will urinate more than usual.

Bladder stones. Some dog breeds are prone in developing kidney/bladder stones.

The common cause of this are high levels of calcium.

When your dog has bladder stones, he will strain to urinate, lick his urinary opening and will sometimes yelp when urinating.

Diabetes. Diabetes is a disorder that happens between the glucose-insulin connection in the body. If your dog has diabetes, you'll notice he'll start to vomit more frequently, lose his appetite, have lesser energy, kidney infections and a UTI.

Cushing’s Disease (hyperadrenocorticism). This happens when a dog has high levels of cortisol in the body. Dogs with Cushing’s disease will urinate more than usual.

Managing Urinary Diseases

Depending on the severeness of urinary diseases, some have a great deal of discomfort and pain and are usually euthanized early on. For some who don't have severe cases, you can do some things to improve their quality of life.

Provide proper nutrition. Providing your dog a good, healthy diet is a perfect way to boost up his wellness. But make sure that this diet is advised by your veterinarian so it will provide him with the proper nutrition he needs.

Maintain good hygiene. Bathe your dog regularly and groom him to keep him happy despite his condition.

Dog diapers and pee pads. Avoid your dog from bathing in his pee and poop, dog diapers and pee pads are such great help in keeping your dog comfortable and your home clean since dogs with urinary diseases tend to urinate more and tend to create more accidents at home.
