Disposable Dog Diapers VS Washable. Which is Better?

Parents of new babies aren’t the only ones who ask the question “which diapers are better: disposable or washable?” Often parents of fur babies find themselves needing to clean up frequent messes around the house. These messes can be a result of behavioral issues (marking territory) or health issues (GI upset).

Some other reasons your dog may need to wear a diaper:

  • Dog urinary and fecal incontinence
  • Female dog on their menses (period)
  • Female dogs in heat (to avoid unwanted matings)
  • During housebreaking training
  • Periodic use (travelling)

To help you decide which dog diapers are right for your pooch and pocketbook, disposable or washable, let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons of both:

DISPOSABLE DOG DIAPERS

Pros

Probably the biggest draw of disposable dog diapers is the convenience. Soiled diapers can simply be tossed into the trash can and a clean diaper put on your four-legged pal. For this reason, these disposable diapers can come in handy should you and your dog travel frequently.

Cons

While disposable dog diapers are a convenient solution for short term use, they can become pretty expensive should your dog have to wear diapers indefinitely.

Also, disposable dog diapers are similarly made to disposable baby diapers. In fact, many dog parents simply buy regular baby diapers for their pets. The problem is, these diapers have chemicals, dyes and gels that can be harmful to dogs, particularly those with sensitive skin.

Another con of disposable dog diapers is how they’re made. Generally speaking, disposable diapers are flimsy. Should you pull too hard on the side tabs, you could easily rip the diaper. And you don’t want anything nasty to fall out of your dog’s diaper onto the floor!

Finally, if you want to help save the environment, disposable dog diapers are not the way to go. Each year millions of TONS of waste end up in landfills. Disposable dog diapers are not biodegradable, so when they wind up in landfills, that’s exactly where they stay.

WASHABLE DOG DIAPERS

Pros

If you have a dog that must wear a diaper for the rest of his or her life or even just an extended period of time, using washable diapers is certainly the more economical way to go. Since these diapers are made to be used and washed over and over again, they are tougher and won’t rip or tear when you are changing your fur baby.

They are also the best choice when it comes to “going green,” because they are reused instead of being tossed into the trash.

You also won’t have to worry about potentially harmful dyes and gels used in the disposable brand diapers. This makes washable dog diapers an all-around healthier choice for your pet.

Cons

The only real con to using washable diapers is there is a bit of cleanup involved. While a wet diaper can simply be tossed into your washing machine, a poopy diaper will need to be cleaned up a bit before it goes in. When you compare this small inconvenience with the amount of money you can save each year, it doesn’t really seem like an inconvenience at all.

There are a few things to remember when using dog diapers:

  • Be sure to measure and weight your dog correctly so you can choose the right size diaper for them. Diapers that are too small will be uncomfortable for your pooch, while diapers that are too big will keep falling off.
  • Use all-natural non-toxic laundry detergents to wash your dog diaper.
  • Be sure to change your dog’s diaper frequently to avoid the chance of rashes or urinary tract infections. Also, be sure to clean your dog’s genitals and hind area 2 – 3 times a day, particularly after they have defecated, to keep them healthy.
